Walkerville School Quadrangle

This is a very high traffic play area for the primary school. We came up with a design which not only dramatically improved the appearance of the area, but introduced new features including sandstone surfaces and shade trees for cooling.

Planning & Logistics

Although there was a lot of product we had to bring in and material which needed removal, we tried to make the right choices environmentally, such as retaining bitumen in places, just painting it charcoal to give it a lift. We used primer and line marking paint so it would last many years even with lots of foot traffic

Practical Completion

We kept the quadrangle feel with the red bricks which 'tied in' to the building walls bricks, used natural sandstone for paving and seating to provide a colour contrast and a smoother, cooler surface. We imported mature trees to eventually provide shading to most of the yard.

Custom Coping

Maison was the sandstone supplier and one of their special services was to manufacture custom shapes for wall coping (capping). You can see how smooth the line is on the back and front edges - different to when you 'wedge-cut' rectangular pieces.

Dramatic Shapes

We created interesting shapes to bring some interest and unpredictability

Welcoming Space

Compared to what is was prior, this space not only had wow factor, but also became very inviting for students and staff alike

Attention to Detail

One of the components to our brand was attention to detail - both during construction and at the end of the project. Because over half of our work came through word-of-mouth, it is what our clients expected
