Every site is unique. Be it a back or front yard, a school yard, a hospital garden, or an office entrance, there will be a unique formula to achieve desired functional and aesthetic outcomes given the site's conditions and the project's constraints. In my initial consultation I listen to the client's brief which will include the ideal outcomes, and I provide some advice about what is possible, along with some fresh ideas. I ensure the design process is thorough, and then provide project pricing which for clarity is grouped into all the elements involved.
Clearview Back Yard 2024
This client was open to ideas - his brief included low maintenance, productive, and capacity for a pet dog. The lawn was undulating and the yard was sloped east to west. I wanted to provide an outdoor sitting / entertaining area which one day, when budget allowed, could have a pergola built for shade and rain protection.

As you can see in this scale model, I reduced the lawn to allow for the new entertaining area and significant garden areas. A shade tree to provide protection until a pergola structure could be built, retainer walls to create split levels and to divide the yard creating some interest and function, and some timber screening.
Woodville Back Yard 2024
Here the clients want to have a back yard they can use but low maintenance because they will likely rent the property out in the medium term. They want to screen the unsightly neighbouring structures, and allow for their dog. I think once we have built their new yard, they won't want to leave!

For instant screening I have used hardwood decking as a 500mm high fence extension. The ornamental plums at the back will remain, as will the evergreen magnolias pictured. I have introduced an outdoor sitting & BBQ area and lawn, and will use a shade tree and other plants to screen the shed and fences
Maylands Front Courtyard 2024
This cute cottage in Maylands has a front yard which is overgrown and unusable, and a back yard in a similar state. Starting with the front, I have worked a solution withy the client where they maintain the character of the home, but create a private courtyard for them to enjoy, with a surround of beautiful native Spotted Gum fence extension, natural earthy coloured travertine paving to match the sandstone, and new plants to green and provide flower and fragrance. We will add some soft, warm white LED lighting to create a magical ambiance in the evenings.
Maylands Courtyard - For 2024 Construction
In the meantime, the client is having plans drawn up for a renovation and extension of the rear of the house. They want me to landscape the yard in the short term, with a view to having it adaptable to the renovated home when it is built years down the track.
