Victoria Park/ Pakapakanthi (Park 16)

Wetlands Close to the CBD
Here at Park 16 of the eastern park lands, wetlands have been constructed to serve a large catchment. The wetlands take flows from the stream amongst the trees (left) and are bypassed in high flow events
Chain of Ponds
Wetlands are comprised of several ponds each with their specific function. From the inlet there is a sedimentation pond, then a series of macrophyte ponds where biofiltration occurs.

Function
Wetlands not only naturally filter the water so excess may either be re-used for irrigation, etc or improved quality if re-entering the stormwater network or natural creek to protect downstream waterways and ecosystems
Looks and Function
Plant life in wetlands varies in height, colour and texture. Sometimes what some may think is a problem such as algae can be serving an important function or providing habitat for organisms

Design Intent
Gabion rock retainer walls are often used in stormwater systems in Adelaide to retain banks where levels change. Here the designers incorporated soil pockets in the gabions to provide additional greenery for biodiversity and aesthetics
